'Project-based Learning: Workflow & Learning Styles'

The benefits of placing students at the center of their own authentic inquiry have been well-documented as a means to develop understanding.  It is no surprise that students thrive when given the opportunity to generate questions based on their curiosity about real-world challenges.  In addition to outlining expectations and providing mentor-based feedback, the primary role of the teacher in a project-based learning environment is to get out of the way.  However, before the teacher can confidently step aside and assume the role of mentor,  it is essential to teach a series of foundational tools that support a variety of learning styles.

Smartphones, iPads and laptops empower students in a project-based learning environment.  Moving beyond consuming information, these devices are powerful creation vehicles.  However, one of the largest hurdles in maximizing efficiency is understanding how they can all work together.  Students that have a working knowledge of a variety of AppSmashing workflows - in a project-based learning environment - are more nimble, organized, flexible, creative and more effective in USING the tool to PRODUCE what they want.  Ultimately, the teacher is focused on setting up his/her students for success by using whatever tools are available to unlock critical thinking as a means to solve authentic challenges.

This presentation will outline and provide examples of useful project-based learning workflows that support a variety of learning styles.
